November 2023

πŸ‘‹πŸ»

That’s another month in the books. I spent a little over week this month traveling, visiting both North Carolina and Florida for my Thanksgiving break. It was unseasonably warm in Florida, so I was able to float in the pool for a while in between reading and getting some stuff done.

Like I mentioned last month, the makebetter.emailΒ email interoperability summit extended into this month β€”Β it was a great time, and I learned a lot.

I also attended BarCamp Philly this year, where I gave a talk on the engineering principles at Fastmail. It was great to get to know and learn from folks!

I worked on some projects that I learned from, but ultimately didn’t achieve the goals that I set out to achieve:

  • I wrote some code to take algorithmic trading strategies and validate them against historical data. Turns out I should not try to use these strategies!
  • I made a job board for tech jobs that don’t require a degree or experience in the field, but the amount of time it took to research those jobs made it not quite worth the effort.

But, again, that’s okay β€”Β it’s great to just hack on things, even if they don’t pan out.

Also, I played a ton of Football Manager.

music

This month’s new music playlist is absurdly short:

To make up for it, I hope you’ll check out my Spotify Wrapped playlist, too: https://blog.joewoods.dev/music/spotify-wrapped-2023/

I’m still reading Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Fate, the 16th and final book in The Realm of the Elderlings.
