July 2024

πŸ‘‹πŸ» Hi! It’s been an exciting and busy month over here.

I left my previous job at the end of last month and took the first two weeks of this month off. I spent a week of that in Rhode Island, visiting family.

Of course, I spent some of that time relaxing by writing code. I finished up a project that’s now called rsvp.place. This is an online community management platform to collect RSVPs for events, and it’s totally free and open source. Check out the manifesto, and you can also find the code on GitHub. The Philadelphia JavaScript club is even using it now for our next event! I’m extremely happy that this is now out there. Though this project might not be right for everyone, I’m glad there’s an option for people who share my mindset about these kinds of groups β€” unlike some other services that are now trying to extract as much money as possible from people.

I started my new job this month as VP of Engineering at Mobius Materials. I’m managing our engineering program, and am very excited to be currently working more as a player/coach; it’s great to get the chance to write some js and Python. I’m also honored to be able to work on a problem in the world that actually matters, tackling the amount of waste in the electronics industry. We’re already getting so much done, and I’m looking forward to being part of the team that increases that momentum.

This month, I went down to Richmond for a week, working from our office in Shockoe Bottom. It was nice to be back in RVA, and it meant that I got to ride the Amtrak four times this month β€”Β even though I got delayed outside of DC twice.

So yeah: it’s been a busy month!

films

This month, I watched 4 films:

  • Cool Hand Luke β€” β˜…β˜†β˜†β˜†β˜†
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind β€” (rewatch) β˜…β˜…Β½β˜†β˜†
  • Fargo β€” β˜…β˜…β˜…Β½β˜†
  • Argo β€” no rating

Have I mentioned that I love Letterboxd? You can follow me there.

books

This month, I finished 3 books:

  • Zero Days by Ruth Ware β€” I ripped through this one in less than 24 hours. It was fine; definitely exciting enough to keep me engaged.
  • Chip War by Chris Miller.Β
  • Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by William Finnegan β€” I really liked this one. I’m also really glad that I now know so much about surfing.

I read a fair amount of a few different books that I ultimately gave up on: The Savage Detectives by Roberto BolaΓ±o, Tokyo Ueno Station by Miri Yu, and Six Four by Hideo Yokoyama.

Right now, I’m re-reading Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress again.
