Woah, that’s another month in the books!
Four years ago, I opened the October 2020 blog post by asking you to please vote if you can. I’m going to repeat that message again this year: please make a plan to vote!
Work has been incredibly exciting. One reason for this is simply that we’re able to get so much done — it’s so great to have the agency and capacity to knock out project after project, initiative after initiative.
This also marks the end of our first full month back in RVA! I really love this place, and it’s great to be back. I go to Chimborazo to look at the sunset nearly every night.
I’ve also been walking so much. At time of writing, I’m averaging 9.2 km per day (5.7 miles). I’m literally wearing out my shoes.
I’ve also been going to a ton of meetups! It’s been great to get back in touch with the PyRVA folks as well.
To that end, you probably saw this coming: I’ve copied Philly Tech Calendar for Richmond and launched the RVA Tech Calendar. Check it out!
I also decided to attempt to go to every restaurant in Richmond that has vegan food — and, to that end, bought a domain that I saw was available, https://every.restaurant. Right now, it’s mostly a placeholder — live-updating data of my personal mission — but I hope to make a real web app for this at some point.
Many of you know that I’ve been coveting the GPD Win Max 2 for over two years. I finally bought one! It has some issues — in fact, the hard drive failed shortly after I installed Ubuntu on it, and I had to source a replacement, which I was partially reimbursed for by the manufacturer. This does mean I’ve been playing a ton of games, though:
games
Some notes about the games I played this month:
- I played some Balatro on iOS, though not as much as I had been in the months prior to this one. I’m at this weird state where I wish I could share my Nintendo Switch save state with both my phone and my laptop.
- I replayed Watch Dogs 2, which remains one of the best games ever.
- I played a bit of Path of Exile, but I always feel like I’m holding it wrong.
- I’m making good progress through Tactical Breach Wizards, which is absolutely brilliant. Great mechanics, hilarious writing. The only complaint I have is that the controller controls are a little finicky, and I find myself switching to mouse and keyboard occasionally.
music
Here’s my new music discoveries for the month:
films
This month, I watched 3 films:
- The Boy and the Heron — ★★½☆☆
- Sleepy Hollow — ★★☆☆☆
- The Craft — no rating
Have I mentioned that I love Letterboxd? You can follow me there.
books
This month, I finished 1 book:
- Strange Weather in Tokyo by Hiromi Kawakami, trans. Allison Markin Powell — ★★★★½. I liked this way more than I thought I would.
I’m currently slowly working my way through Edith Hamiltion’s Mythology.

- “Permanent Revolution” by Sinclair Cabocel
