Hello!
That’s another month in the books. An oppressively hot one at that — definitely not a fan of how warm it was here this month in Richmond, Virginia. Thankfully, it seems like a reprieve has already rolled in, and I’m delighted that the average temperatures are going to keep their steady decline. I’m really looking forward to being able to walk to work again!
One huge milestone passed this month: my one year anniversary of working at Mobius Materials. It’s been a really fun ride — we’re doing extremely important work, and I’m grateful that this is how I get to spend my time.
This month, outside of work, I spent a lot of time hacking on calendar.city. If you’re not familiar, calendar.city is the platform I use to curate a calendar of cool tech events in certain cities. This month, I added Boston and Washington, D.C., joining Philadelphia and Richmond as the third and fourth cities covered by the website. I also added a view into all of the online events hosted by clubs that are based in those cities.
calendar.city also got a whole host of new features — new tooling to make it easier to manage events, a new calendar view on each city page, a page filled with interesting stats, and a revamped Discord server.
I wrote a quick Jitsi Meet extension for Raycast, but I honestly don’t imagine it will ever get merged. So, uh, here’s a link to the pull request — it’s a negligible amount of code, so I suspect it wouldn’t be that hard to get it set up if you wanted to!
music
This is, I believe, one of the longest “New Music” playlists in the five-year history of the series. There’s a lot of really good tracks on this one, too. I didn’t even bother to order this one — just turn on shuffle. 🙂
films
This month, I watched 1 film — my first in three months, sheesh!
- La Haine — (rewatch) ★★★★★ I saw this with M at The Byrd. Still one of my favorites, and I’m pleased that it holds up for me, so I don’t see if moving from my Letterboxd top four any time soon.
Have I mentioned that I love Letterboxd? You can follow me there.
books
This month, I finished 2 books:
- Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton — I was not a fan. I liked the opening, but it quickly fell off the rails for me. The climax of the book being interspersed with a rant that was espousing a message I absolutely could not get behind made me pretty frustrated.
- The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller — ★★★★★ Amazing, tragic book; highly recommend.
Right now, I’m reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson; I’m also slowly working through Radical Candor by Kim Scott.
failbetter
This month, failbetter published:
- “It’s Always the Husband” by Katie Mazza-Phillips
- “Moored” by Christopher Phelps
- “Piezoelectricity” by Christopher Phelps
stats
This month:
- I typed 896,000 keys and clicked 135,325 times.
- I listened to 1,524 songs.
